Small Group Guide: Light That Reveals

Based on Exodus 25:31-40
Opening Prayer (5 minutes)
Begin by asking God to illuminate your hearts and minds as you discuss His Word together.

Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Question: Share about a time when you were literally in the dark (power outage, camping, etc.). How did it feel? What was your first instinct?

Key Scripture
Exodus 25:31-40 - The instructions for the golden lampstand

Supporting Scriptures:
  • John 8:12 - "I am the light of the world"
  • Matthew 5:14-16 - "You are the light of the world"
  • 1 John 1:5-7 - "God is light; in him there is no darkness"

Key Takeaways from the Sermon
1. The Lampstand Represents Jesus Christ
  • Made of one solid piece of pure gold (90 pounds)
  • Beaten and hammered into shape (representing Christ's suffering)
  • Seven lamps burning continuously (perfection and completeness)
  • Provided the only light in the holy place

2. Light Equals Life; Darkness Equals Death
  • Light reveals, exposes, and provides direction
  • Darkness represents sin, secrets, and separation from God
  • We cannot operate in both light and darkness simultaneously

3. We Are Connected to the Light Source
  • One lampstand, many branches = One body in Christ, many members
  • As branches connected to Christ, we have life and light
  • We are called to be light bearers in the world

4. God Keeps the Light On
  • Even when we're weary, tired, and lost
  • God invites us to "pull over" and rest in Him
  • He never turns off the light for those seeking Him

Discussion Questions

Understanding the Message (15 minutes)
  1. The Golden Lampstand: What stood out to you about the description of the lampstand being made from one beaten piece of gold? How does this connect to Christ's sacrifice?
  2. Light vs. Darkness: The sermon stated that "men love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19). Why do you think people sometimes prefer darkness even when light is available?
  3. No Secrets from God: How does knowing that "the eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good" affect how you live your daily life?

Personal Reflection (20 minutes)
  1. Your Dark Places: The pastor mentioned that even believers can end up in "dark places" in life. Can you share (to your comfort level) about a time when you felt spiritually in darkness? What helped you find the light again?
  2. Sleepy at the Wheel: The sermon used the metaphor of driving while drowsy. In what areas of your life might you be "sleepy at the wheel" right now—going through the motions without spiritual alertness?
  3. Wrong Traveling Companions: "Be careful who you put into your life because oftentimes you're going to end up where they end up." How do you discern who should be your close companions on your spiritual journey?

Practical Application (20 minutes)
  1. Being Light: If you are light because Christ lives in you, how should that change the way you enter different spaces (work, home, social settings)? What does it practically look like to "light up a room"?
  2. The Oil and the Flame: The lampstand required pure olive oil to burn continuously. The oil represents the Holy Spirit. How do you "refill" your spiritual oil to keep your light burning bright?
  3. Pulling Over: The sermon encouraged us to "take a knee" when we're weary. What spiritual practices help you rest and reorient yourself when life gets overwhelming?

This Week's Challenge
Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:

Option 1: Light Inventory
Each day, ask yourself:
  • Where did I shine Christ's light today?
  • Where did I hide my light or retreat into darkness?
  • Journal your observations and pray about areas needing change.

Option 2: Refueling Station
Identify when you feel most spiritually "empty" or tired. Schedule specific times this week to "pull over" and spend time with God (prayer, worship, Scripture reading, rest).

Option 3: Be Intentional Light
Choose one specific place where you'll consciously be a light this week (workplace, neighborhood, family gathering). Before entering that space, pray: "Lord, let your light shine through me here."

Option 4: Relationship Assessment
Prayerfully evaluate your closest relationships. Are you traveling with people heading toward the light or away from it? Have an honest conversation with God about any changes needed.

Group Prayer Focus (10 minutes)
Share and Pray:
  • For those feeling weary and "sleepy at the wheel"
  • For strength to walk in the light consistently
  • For courage to be light in dark places
  • For wisdom in choosing godly companions
  • For anyone who needs to "pull over" and find rest in God

Closing Thought
"This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine. Everywhere I go, I'm going to let it shine. You can't put my light out because you can't put Jesus out."
Remember: You are not just reflecting light—you ARE light because Christ lives in you. The world needs to see Jesus in you. Don't quit. Don't hide. Let it shine!

For Next Week
  • Read John 8:12-30 and Matthew 5:14-16
