5-Day Devotional: Drawing Near to God

-Pastor Thyris Banks
Day 1: Beyond Second-Hand Faith
Reading: Job 42:5-6; James 4:8
Devotional: Job declared, "I heard of you by hearing of the ear, but now my eyes see you." There's a profound difference between knowing about God and knowing God personally. Many of us inherit faith traditions—grandma's prayers, mama's testimonies, the pastor's encounters—but God invites us into our own intimate relationship with Him. James promises that when we draw near to God, He draws near to us. This requires intentional pursuit, not casual observation. Today, move beyond inherited faith. Stop living on borrowed experiences. Pursue Christ for yourself through prayer, worship, and His Word. The God who revealed Himself to others longs to reveal Himself to you personally. Distance distorts perception, but closeness brings clarity and transformation.

Day 2: The Covenant of Intimacy
Reading: Psalm 42:1-2; John 4:13-14
Devotional: "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for you, O God." The deer doesn't search for water casually—its life depends on it. After running from predators and enduring the heat, the exhausted deer pants with desperate need. This is the posture God desires from us: desperate hunger for His presence. Jesus told the woman at the well that He offers living water—drink from Him and never thirst again. God doesn't accept convenience; He requires covenant. He won't share His glory or settle for 99.9% of your heart. He demands all or nothing. When your soul becomes truly thirsty, you'll stop drinking from broken cisterns—popularity, relationships, success—and run to the only Source that satisfies eternally.

Day 3: The Power of Proximity
Reading: Exodus 34:29-35; 2 Corinthians 3:18
Devotional: When Moses spent time in God's presence, his face glowed with divine radiance. He didn't have to announce where he'd been—the evidence was visible. Intimacy with God transforms you from the inside out. You can't stay close to fire and remain cold. When you consistently draw near to Christ, your appetite changes, your speech changes, your desires shift, and your discernment sharpens. People will know you've been with Jesus not by your words alone, but by the peace, joy, and character you carry. The tragedy today isn't that people are thirsty—it's that they're drinking from broken vessels. Stop seeking satisfaction in temporary things. Pursue proximity with the One who changes you simply by being near Him.

Day 4: Love Requires Sacrifice and Commitment
Reading: John 15:13; Romans 5:8
Devotional: True love has two essential elements: sacrifice and commitment. Jesus demonstrated both when He laid down His life for us and promised never to leave or forsake us. Many confuse love with convenience, showing up only when they need something. But covenant love pursues consistently, sacrifices willingly, and commits permanently. God won't accept a relationship where you only call when you're in trouble, then disappear when things improve. He desires daily intimacy, not occasional visits. Examine your relationship with Christ honestly. Are you pursuing Him or just using Him? Do you want Him or just His blessings? God responds to hunger, not performance. He's looking for hearts that genuinely desire Him—in sickness and health, in abundance and lack, until death and beyond.

Day 5: Intimacy Unlocks Revelation
Reading: Psalm 25:14; John 15:15
Devotional: Jesus told His disciples, "No longer do I call you servants, but friends, for a servant does not know what his master is doing." Intimacy with God unlocks dimensions of revelation unavailable to casual observers. The disciples knew Jesus differently than the crowds—they witnessed His miracles but also experienced His teachings, saw His power but felt His compassion. When you spend consistent time with Christ, you learn to recognize His voice, understand His timing, discern His conviction, and rest in His character. You stop doubting His love, questioning His hand, and fearing the future. Distance breeds confusion; closeness brings confidence. Today, commit to knowing God deeper—not just attending church, but pursuing His presence daily. What He reveals in intimacy will sustain you when emotions fade and circumstances shift.
